由go for it(2a)谈初中英语课堂的导入

1.Introduction

“Teaching is guiding, facilitating learning, enablinglearners to learn and setting the conditions for learning” (Nathan Gage,1964:269). For many years, a lot of scholars and teachers have been exploringdifferent kinds of teaching patterns for triggering the students’ interests in Englishand enhancing the efficiency of teaching. They have been seeking differentkinds of approaches to optimize the process of class teaching method, such as Five-stepTeaching Method and Task-Based Method are put forward. But thesemethods pay more attention to imparting new knowledge to students and trainingtheir abilities of using English than to triggering their interests in English. However, as Einstein said “ interest is the best teacher”. So teachers shouldbegin their teaching with “ triggering and arousing ” the students’ interests (PennyUr, 2000:280). They should try to attract students from the beginning of eachlesson and find a proper way of leading-in. In this way, the students’interests can be gradually led to the learning.

Many teachers, especially Englishteachers have focused on leading-in methods. As the saying goes,A good beginning is thehalf way. A good leading-in method can arouse the students’ interestsand it will be a link between the old knowledge and the new one. So thestudents can use their own knowledge to accept the new points of knowledgequickly. Some new textbooks that aim at giving students more chances to usetheir “ target language ” have appeared in Chinese middle schools (Rod Ellis,2000:4), such as the book Go For It and Senior English for ChinaStudent’s Book. The teaching content is showed by “ topic ” in the book of Gofor It. For some topics, maybe the students could understand them easily. Butfor other topics, maybe the students could not understand; even they have notread them before. Therefore, the teachers’ leading-in is more and more importantin English class teaching.

2.1 The Definition of Leading-in

“Leading-in isintroduction and bringing in ” (Oxford, 2002:842). In class teaching, leading-inis the beginning of new knowledge and activities. It is the first step of a newlesson just like the prelude of a drama. And it is a creative work by theteacher for new lessons. 内容来自论文无忧网 www.paper51.com

“In the 1970s, C. Turneyand other scholars brought up the functions of leading-in. They are GainingAttention, Arousing Motivation, Making Teaching Goals, Understanding Study andMaking Links ”(陈力勤, 1999:53). They considered thatGaining Attention is the most important part at the beginning of teachingcontent. Leading-in methods must conform to the Teaching Goals. In Englishteaching methods, the function of showing is to provide the new perceptualmaterial. How can students understand the new text? It depends on how teacherslead and show the material.
