  Abstract

This paper focuses on the ambiguity and the linguistictechniques that have brought about the ambiguity in “Because I could not stopfor Death”. This poem is one of the most original and classic death poemswritten by Emily Dickinson. Death and eternity are the themes of this poem. EmilyDickinson used ambiguity as a conscious language technique in this poem. Myanalysis of ambiguity in this poem focuses on three levels: the lexical, thesyntactic and the contextual. Symbolic ambiguity is also discussed. Ambiguitymeans more than one interpretation is possible within the context. In this poem, ambiguity is used as an instrument of expression to enrich the meaning of thepoem and to add to its aesthetic effects. I hope this analysis can help usunderstand better the relationship between death and life, death and eternityin Dickinson’s writing.

copyright paper51.com

EmilyDickinson was one of the most distinguished poets in American literature history.Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, on December 10, 1830. Her familywas conspicuous at that time, well known for political and educationalactivities. She was well educated in her youth. Dickinson was very popular andsociable in her early years. However, during her mid-twenties, she began togrow reclusive. She stepped out of her house rarely, thus was called “Amherstrecluse”. She attended almost exclusively to household chores and wrote poetry. She learned public speaking from her father and the value of silence from hermother, as in their conversation her mother would give a silent reply. Shenever married throughout her life. Dickinson died quietly in 1886. Her death, just like her life, was quiet and unnoticed. After her death hundreds of herpoems were found in different places by her relatives. But only seven werepublished in her life.
