Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), anoutstanding American poet in the nineteenth century, the master of the world'slyric poems, is good at using the unique imagery and metaphor to express theman’s complex inner life, thus she is seen as a pioneer of modern Americanpoetry by most people.

She becomes a milestone of marking a new era inAmerican poetry with Whitman.    Inthis paper, the uses of images in Emily Dickinson’s poems are divided intothree stages according to the poetry's different themes. Emily Dickinson was born in aquite respectable family in Amherst, but she didn’t like the reputation andprestige of the excitement of public life.
