Writing is one of the four basic skills one should master inthe course of learning English. It can help students develop the habit andability of thinking in English and become more competent in English. Specifically,it consolidates and reinforces the grammatical structures, idioms, andvocabulary. In all, “writing helps the students learn”(Raimes,1983:1). Furthermore,English writing is one of the most practical tools in students’ future career. Itwill be used in writing telexes, business letters, research papers and publicspeeches. For example, no matter what kind of research paper is, it requiresthat there should be an English abstract in it. In addition, with thedevelopment of society and the frequent contact among different countries,English writing becomes more and more important if face-to-face speech inEnglish with foreigners does not happen. In such case, most of students justcommunicate with a foreigner through writing. For example, if a student wantsto send an E-mail to his friends in other countries, he has to write inEnglish. All these require that students have a good English writing.

However, nowadays, students’ English writing is not so good. “Writinghas long been a weak point in senior middle school English teaching practice”[①]. Ye (2002) also pointedout that Chinese students go higher scores in reading and listeningcomprehension, but show poorer ability in writing. On the other hand, writingplays a vital role in the National College Entrance Examination. So, in orderto help the students improve their writing ability, we first need to find outwhat errors they have and what cause the errors. After analyzing the errorsthey have, we can know the reasons why they make such errors, and then we canfind a better way to help them to avoid making such errors and improve theirwriting ability.
