Professor Wang Zongying(1978)saidreading aloud plays a very important role in Chinese traditional teaching ,andthe ancient people studied Chinese by reading aloud. Besides, Wang Zongyingpointed out (1978) that reading aloud can not only strengthen the memory butalso improve thinking ability, and reading aloudis not only pronunciation action, and while reading aloud, we can think inEnglish way and master word match, sentence structure, context cohesion,pronunciation, intonation and stress. So what we learn is not a single part butwhole English system. Readingaloud is used by many teachers when teaching English in the classroom, becausereading aloud round the class is too often used at the expense of silentreading for meaning. (Nuttall,2000:201)

According to teaching method of Wang Qiang(2006),reading aloud also has its particular value for the students who are learningEnglish as a foreign language. Readingaloud can help them acquire good pronunciation and intonation, familiarize themwith new words and the stress patterns of English, help them to build up theirconfidence in speaking the language. Therefore, opportunities should beavailable for students to practice reading aloud in class.

“Reading aloud is acollective activity often involving more than one person, and reading aloud isbelieved to be easier to manage as we can observe and hear from the students sothat we know they are involved at least in mouths if not always in minds.”(王蔷 2006. 5) Therefore, it issafe to claim that reading aloud is good at improving effect of teaching andmakes teaching ambience more active and can improve students’ ability ofstudying by themselves.

Forreading aloud, many scholars and experts have done many researches on it.Barnett(1989) maintains that reading aloud has always held an important placein foreign and second language programs, with the possible exception of theperiod when audiolingual methodology dominated in American classroom. But sheadds that reading is now seen in a different light, namely “as communication,as a mental process, as a manipulation of strategies.” According to LiTianxiang (1983:90) reading aloud plays a great importance in English teaching.First, it is useful for developing basic reading ability; Second, it can helpstudents to understand texts and help the teachers to check students’understanding; Third, it is helpful for improving pronunciation and intonation;Besides, many teachers and scholars have written some essays about theimportance of reading aloud in English teaching and learning. They mentionedthe ways of improving reading aloud, namely “reading after teachers, readingafter classmates who have better pronunciation, reading together in theclassroom and so on.” According to some scholars, reading aloud is atraditional method of English language learning, it refers to expressingemotional thoughts in the linguistic materials by some reading skills such asstress, rhythm and tone. Readingaloud has a factor of reading, so it plays a pivotal role in learning andteaching English very well. Readingaloud not only can help in fostering the sense of language and intensifyingmemory, but also triggering and improving the creative thinking. Cook(1994), Penmyoke(1996)and 丁言忍(2001)proved that reading aloudfluently and reciting are useful for the improvement of English.
