1.1 The Background of LanguageTransfer

Secondlanguage acquisition (SLA) is different fromthe first language acquisition and it is strongly influenced by the learner’sfirst language (L1). When the first language (L1) influences the acquisition ofthe target language, language transfer happens. SLA research shows that the firstlanguage transfer is one of the important factors that influence SLA. That is, the learners’ acquired knowledge and skillsin the native language can be transferred to the second language. “Individualtends to transfer the forms and meanings of their native language and cultureto the foreign language and culture-both productively when they attempt tospeak the language and to act in the culture receptively, and when they attemptto grasp and understand the language and the culture as practiced by natives”(Diane and Long, 2008:52-53). Most of Chinese English learners have alreadyacquired some Chinese knowledge before they learn English, which make themnaturally use the knowledge of native language to learn English, so that the influenceof native language is unavoidable in English learning.
