Amongthe four language skills, reading might be the most familiar to us Chineselearners. In a way, we have been learning English mainly through reading. Thereare many reasons why getting student to read English texts. (舒白梅, 2004:139) It is an important part of the foreign languageteacher’s job. Four main reasons why it is importantare briefly discussed below.

In the first place, the students needthe ability to read, either for study purposes, or for their job, or for theircareers. This is the most important reason for reading. They need to do a lotof reading practice in the classroom in order to acquire the necessary skillsfor real life reading. (舒白梅, 2004:139)

Readingis useful for other purposes. At the very least, some of the language sticks instudents’ minds as part of the process of language acquisition, and if thereading text is especially interesting, acquisition is likely to be even moresuccessful. (舒白梅, 2004:139)

Readingtexts also provide good models for English writing. It can cultivate theability of writing. (宋桂月, 2002:163) When anEnglish teacher teaches the skill of writing, he/she needs to show the studentsmodels of what we are encouraging them to do.

Readingtexts also provide opportunities to study vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, andthe way we construct sentences, paragraphs and texts. (舒白梅,2004:140)
