1.1 Importance of Vocabularyand Its Teaching paper51.com “Vocabulary is one of thethree elements of language: speech sounds, grammar and vocabulary.” (林承璋、刘世平,2005:7) Language study constitutes the study of speech， sounds， grammar and vocabulary.Vocabulary is an essential material of language because language emerges first as words, “Without grammar very little can be conveyed; withoutvocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” (Wilkins, 1972:111). Without enough words one cannotcommunicate with others, no matter how wonderful his grammar and pronunciationare (McCarthy, 1990), because vocabulary is the carrier for people tocommunicate with each other.
