傣语对英语学习的影响

Abstract

Dai language and English belong to different languagefamilies. English belongs to the Indo-European family, and Dai language belongsto the Sino-Tibetan family. Although they belong to different families, theyspell word with 26 Latin letters, and their syllables are created in spellingform. But in fact, there are still some differences between them. "Whether they learn the target language consciouslyor subconsciously, learners have come to the task of acquiring a secondlanguage within their L1 knowledge in learning a second language. This is knownas language transfer. Transfer can be both positive or negative, positivetransfer occurs when an L1 pattern is identical with, or similar to a targetlanguage pattern. Negative transfer occurs when an L1 pattern is different fromthe counter part pattern of the target language. Such language transfer wasfound at all levels of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar (何兆熊, 梅得明 1998)."

My mother language is Dai language, Chinese is my firstforeign language, and so English is my second foreign language. Whoever learnsthe second language, he/she, inevitably, may meet with the question of motherlanguage transfer. Generally speaking, the universality of language reflects inpositive transfer. For example, English "die" is similar to Dailanguage "dai31" in pronunciation and meaning. So when Dai studentlearn the word "die", they can feel it is easy to them. That islanguage transfer. And when the Dai students learn English, they may payattention to the grammar similarities between Dai language sentence and Englishsentence. In this case, they can analyze the English sentence exactly as theway in Dai language. When Dai language is similar to the target language, theymay feel English is easy, otherwise they feel it is difficult. And because of theirpoor understanding of the usage of English words, some Dai students naturally couldonly translate them from the literal meaning into Dai language, which causesthe negative transfer of mother language. Another reason Dai students feelingEnglish difficult is because their process of learning is different from thatof Han students; their process of learning is "English-Chinese-Dailanguage". By contrasting Dai language with English language, by analyzingits positive and negative transfer of mother language in English learning, thefollowing paragraphs are going to deal with the similarities and differencesbetween English and Dai language, in the hope to find some ways to help theteachers and students in the minority regions to overcome their difficulties inteaching and studying, and to improve their English in an easy and effectiveway.
