红河哈尼族彝族自治州是全国的人口大州,除汉族外,世居着哈尼、彝、苗、傣、壮、瑶、回、拉轱、布依9个少数民族,是全国哈尼族、彝族的主要聚居区之一,也是云南省回族较为集中的地区之一。红河州人口374.19万,其中少数民族人口202.87万,占总人口的54.2%。这些少数民族都有各自的本族语言,他们大部分人不会说普通话,而且少数民族学生在小学不学英语而学汉语,所以和汉族的孩子比起来,英语对他们来说就显得特别难,尤其是英语词汇。词汇是构成语言的重要因素,也是学习者最难突破的一关。通过调查得知大部分少数民族学生词汇量少,词汇是他们一大难关,也是影响他们英语成绩的一大因素。

This paper is about how toteach minority students of Honghe Hani & YiAutonomous Prefecture English vocabulary. To prepare for the followingdiscussion, let us first have a brief look at the educational background ofminority students in Honghe Hani & Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Honghe Hani & YiAutonomous Prefectureis one of the most population of prefectures in China.Besides Han nationalities there are 9 other ethnic minorities, i.e. Hani, Yi,Miao, Dai, Zhuang, Yao,Hui, Lahu and Buyi nationalities, which dwell in the prefecture. Among the 374,1900 inhabitants, about 202,8700 are minorities which makeup 54.2% of the total population. Since all the minorities have their ownlanguages, most of them cannot speak the common spoken Chinese, and sinceEnglish is not taught in primary school, so it is much more difficult for theminority students to learn English, especially in learning the Englishvocabulary. The same problem remains with some Han students living in theregion. paper51.com

How should we solve theproblems? This has been a question asked by many middle school teachers.

By putting words of the topic into the conversation and guiding thestudents to talk about the words, the strategy of can stimulate students’ thinking,imagination and memory. It can enliven the atmosphere of the class and attractthe students’ attention. And it can enrich the meaning of vocabulary and further the students’ understanding of new words. Byusing the communicative vocabulary teaching, thestudents can not only remember words but can use them correctly.
