1. Introduction

http://www.paper51.com

Numeralsbelong to a part of language and play an important part in the life. “Culture,in a broad sense, means the total way of life of a people including thepatterns of belief, customs, objects, institutions, techniques, and languagethat characterizes the life of the human community.”(Wang Zhengya, 2001) Numbers are used widely inour daily life. Without numbers, nothing can get along well in the world. Owingto influence of the national psychology, religious beliefs, worship oflanguages and other cultural distinctions between China and western countries, numeralsare endowed with abundant cultural connotations. Many mysterious and powerfulnumerals in English and Chinese are used to represent “lucky” words in onelanguage, while “unlucky”, even taboo words in another language. For instance,Chinese people adore numeral eight (发) (making money) in theirlife, while four (si) sounds like (死) represents “unlucky”. Thispaper discusses the cultural connotations in English and Chinese numerals byanalyzing some typical numbers. And therefore the paper generalizes some commonlyused translating skills. Translationdoes not just mean the change of symbols into another language, but it is aprocess of information substitution. For example, 九死一生(anarrow escape from death). However, translation involves many factors, such as culturaldifferences. As a translator, the task is totranslate the information he or she receives into symbols that he or she will expresses.
