2.1Native element

Thenative element is conventionally used to devote words of Anglo-Saxon origin. Itbelongs to the original English stock, brought to Britain in the fifth centuryby the German tribes: the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes, thus known asAngles-Saxon words. They form the mainstream of the basic word stock and standat the core of the language. (张维友,1998:18) Take the “heel” for example. It has thecharacteristics of the native elements: heel of Achilles (a vulnerablepoint), heel over head or head over heels (upside down); cool one’s heel (bekept waiting), show a clean pair of heels, take to one’s heels (run away), turnon one’s heels (turn sharply round) (陈志安, 2004:) 2.2Foreign elements

Theforeign elements, on the other hand, are words taken from any other language, andthen exist in English. English language is a heavy borrower and has adoptedwords from all other major languages of the world, covering about 80 percent ofthe modern English vocabulary. (张维友,1998:20) No wonder that Baugh (1978)talks of the English language as “ cosmopolitan vocabulary”, which reveals thetrue nature of the English vocabulary. For example: mother tongue is from linguamaternal (Latin), surplus valueis from meisterstuck (German). Thisindicates that foreign words originally do not exist in the English language, but are borrowed from foreign languages later in the process of languagedevelopment in various ways. 内容来自www.paper51.com
