First,the teacher has a book in her hands, and asks “What is this?” Of course, as abeginner, maybe he does not know the meaning of the “book”, the teacher shouldpermit them to say it in Chinese because they know the meaning of the word intheir mother tongue, and they have had the experiences of using books and theyknow the pronunciation; they do not know how to say it in English. So it is theteacher’s turn to teach. Then the teacher may ask “what is this in English”,and the students can answer the question in English  “It is a book”. This is my technique howto teach “What is this in English?” It is very helpful for the students tograsp the basic words for their daily communication, and it is very easy forthe teachers to use the skill. Sometimes, even students themselves can asktheir classmates while pointing at something “What is this in English?” In thisway, most children can learn words in English easily.

Atthe first stage, because most children are beginners, they are quite interestedin whatever their teacher says in English, and they eagerly imitate whatevertheir teacher says. The drill “What is this in English” can satisfy their needsto know how to say this and that in English. But this skill is only useful forbeginners to stimulate their interest. To those intermediate level students,this may make them feel bored. So we had better find some other skills tostimulate or promote their interest in vocabulary study.

Mostchildren like new things and they can accept them easily. So when a teachersees his students get bored with one skill, he should change another way tostimulate their interest in English. As most children like riddles, here we canuse a game “Guess which word it is”. Before the class, the teacher preparesseveral cards. On each card, there are two to three words. Some of these wordshave been learned, and some do not but will be studied just in the next lesson.In the class, before the new lesson, the teacher and students play the gametogether. Onone card, there are three words “chalk, sun, map”. Among the three words, theword “map” is a new word that the students will study in the next lesson. Sothe students do not know how to say it in English, but they have learned thefirst two words “chalk” and “sun”. When the teacher says “It is something inour classroom, on the teacher’s desk. I can use it to write words on theblackboard. Now guess what it is.” The students can find the answer “chalk”easily. When the teacher says “The third word is about a piece of paper. There isevery country’s name on the paper, and you can find Yunnan’s position on the paper. Now what isit?” As this is a new word, the teacher may allow them to say it in Chinese “ditu”.Now, it is the teacher’s turn to say “It is a map” and write down the word “map”on the blackboard and tell them that it is a new word that they will learn itin the text.

Theteacher writing some words on the cards is to make students understand thewords easily. We know, if the words on the card are too difficult for the studentsto get the right answer, the students may easily get discouraged; if they havethe right answers and get the teacher’s praise, they will have a sense ofachievement. But there should be some new words on the card. Thus it can drawthe students’ attention to the new lesson and new words.

Afterthe teacher sets a model for the guessing meaning of the world, she can asksome students to do the job. If the students are encouraged to give a riddle inEnglish to their classmates, they may find great fun in it. Even the lowestlevel students can say some words in English, so the teacher should also givethese students chances to give them confidence in learning English.
