Halliday(2001:275—292) puts lexical cohesion relations divided into two classes:Reiteration and Collocation. And the same word, synonym or near-synonym,superordinate or general words set together are called reiteration. However,Huang Gouwen (1988:122—126)believes that lexical reiteration means to use the same wordwhich in other word is repetition, synonyms and near synonyms, hyponymy, generalword such as man, woman, thing, place, etc. And the sentence throughreiteration achieved connected in the discourse.

There are many relations between lexical cohesion and Englishwriting. The word repetition which is one of the lexical cohesion methods andto use it properly not only can express the link effect of paper, but also canarrive to highlight the topic of the paper and stress the impression forreaders. Li Youli(2009) published an article entitled "Cohesionand Coherence in English" in weekly test of the "Foreign LanguageTeaching and Research".  Itsummarizes different views on the relationship of coherence and cohesion in thelanguage of scholars and put forward her views.  Basis on comprehensive the three pointsof views in it and summarized Li Youli’s opinions.  The author tend to the Li Youli’s view whichis that cohesion expresses a relationship within different sentences orsentences in different components in sentences the surface grammar or the vocabularywhich in discourse or text. Many domestic scholars had researched about cohesive device withEnglish teaching. The teacher Li Guoliang published the Lexical Cohesion with CET6Writing in Yunnan University. It analyzes what the lexical cohesion is and itsapplication in CET6. He points out that using lexical cohesion proficiently isa significant condition for people whose major courses are not the English to achievehigh scores in CET6. Therefore English writing teachers should pay specialattention to the lexical cohesive and introduce its application in teaching (LiGuoliang, 2009). There are many scholars conducted research the lexicalcohesion with the English reading. Such as Yu Qingxiu and Wei Junxuan who arein the Foreign Language College of Xi 'an Jiaotong Universitypublished the Function of Lexical Cohesion in Reading Comprehension. It pointsout that the use of lexical cohesion methods can accurately find out thecentral theme in reading comprehension, understand the author intention andimprove reading comprehension skills (Yu Qingxiu, 2002:106—109). However, many scholars hadresearched lexical cohesive methods with English writing. But there is no oneto move forward a single step on the problems that exist when students uselexical cohesion in English writing. This is why the author here continues toresearch it? What’s more, this paper focuses on the situations of English-majoredstudents at Yuxi Normal University using lexical cohesion in English Writingand the problems existing when students use lexical cohesion devices in theirwriting. So to write this paper is necessary which can help students finding outsome problems on the usage of lexical cohesion in writing composition and thento improve their writing skills. And the author chooses sophomore students ofYuxi Normal University as the subjects to analysis the usage of lexicalcohesion methods in their English writing as they have learned English Writingand they will going to have TEM-4 exam.
