中英饮食习语的文化差异

Abstract

Idioms, as the cream of language and the “living fossil” of culture,reflect many aspects of culture. Thus diet culture which is an important partof culture is also mirrored strongly and vividly by idioms. Both Chinese andEnglish idioms carry the dietary culture of each nation. Different translations onseveral different diet idioms in both Chinese and English languages will beanalyzed throughout this article. As a result, it will be very important tounderstand the great cultural contents in the idioms of diet in order to do abetter job in the research of cross-cultural communication. copyright paper51.com

习语是语言的精华,也是文化的“活化石”,它反映着文化的各个方面。饮食文化作为文化的一个重要组成部分,其也被习语广泛、鲜明的反映着。无论是汉语习语还是英语习语,都承载着本民族各具特色的饮食文化。通过研究大量汉英不同饮食习语的不同翻译,对我们更好的理解饮食习语的巨大文化内涵起到重要作用,并促进和提高我们跨文化交际的能力。

Anidiomis an expression whose meaning does not seem to follow logically from thecombination of the meaning of its parts and the "rules of language".The word idiom comes from Greek and means own or peculiar. So an idiom is amode of expression peculiar to a language which cannot be explainedgrammatically( Simpson & Mendis, 2003: 420 ).

Idiomsare shaped in a community through long periods of living from the local people,and it is the reflection and expression of the culture of a certain race. Thedifferences in geographic location, history, customs and living habits will bereflected in the spoken language and in idioms primarily in the idioms of thediet. Using idioms when speaking is a casual way for the local people toexpress their ideas clearly and lively to others from another nation.

Inthe course of cross-cultural communication, it is an important thing to usethem correctly in order to make us better understood by the people withdifferent cultural backgrounds. Unfortunately, only people who are very good atspeaking this kind of language can communicate adequately and stick to thepoint using idiomatic expressions in their speech. The reason is, most of thetime, people know little about the history and the culture behind these idioms.
